Learn the Viola in a Day! (8 hours, that is…) No Joke!

L’Alto: Viola Club at The University of Utah is proud to present “Learn the Viola in a Day! (8 Hours, that is!)…No Joke!,” a comprehensive technique workshop with legendary violist Alan de Veritch.

Although the title of this workshop may appear a bit incredulous, the truth is that Alan de Veritch has indeed found an efficient and effective way to simplify and streamline viola/violin technique into a “system” which enables one to consistently draw on the instrumental basics when confronted with any level of technical challenge. Broken down into eight 1-hour progressive lessons, Professor de Veritch has used this approach and method as the basis of his teaching for many years. His method is centered on making the “unnatural” (playing the viola!) seem as natural as possible. Additionally, “The System” creates a template that one can use with their own students as one develops their own teaching style. It is material that is easily transferable to violin students as the materials are readily available. It is also material that is extremely flexible and can be adjusted for any age student.

While “The de Veritch System” has typically served as the first eight lessons for each of his private student’s, Alan has only, on rare occasions, presented this material in a workshop setting. Please join us for this enlightening and unique technique exploration!

Saturday November 16 Professor de Veritch will cover lessons 1-4. Lessons 5-8 will be covered the following Saturday, November 23.

Bring your instruments and work alongside the University of Utah Viola Club, or just audit the workshop and take notes! Drop in as you are able and stay as long as you like.

Materials covered will be Schradieck Books 1, 2, 3, Carl Flesch Scale System, and Kreutzer etudes. We will have handouts as well.
